INGVterremoti 2.2

This is the official application of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) that displays data on the most recent earthquakes that occur in Italy and, to a limited extent, the strongest events worldwide.

The parameters (origin time, epicenter coordinates, depth, and magnitude) of earthquake locations are available thanks to the INGV's Seismic Surveillance Service, which is operational 24/7.

The parameters are subject to change as soon as new data becomes available.

NEW VERSION, FAST and RELIABLE

*** Between August 2016 and March 2017, more than 65,000 seismic events with a magnitude greater than 1 were recorded. This abnormal quantity of events made it complex to manage the Italian seismicity database within the app.

Both ourselves and many of you experienced slowdowns and difficulties, especially shortly after the strongest earthquakes when the app should have been faster and more efficient.

We have therefore rewritten the app by eliminating database management, making it significantly faster in updates, lighter to download, but with all the search functions and scientific information that make it unique.

However, the database within the app allowed it to be used offline. Unfortunately, now the app requires an activated network connection.

NEW DEFINITION OF EPICENTER ZONE

*** In the previous version, the app indicated the province where the epicenter fell as the "Earthquake zone." In this case as well, following the seismic sequence of 2016/2017, we have tried to provide more precise information. The province has been replaced by the distance from the nearest municipality to the epicenter coordinates. In future versions of the app, some modifications will be made to make this information more visible, especially for smaller screen versions.

FEATURES

The app allows you to view the latest earthquakes that occurred in the previous 3 days.

The app also allows you to view Italian seismicity from 2005 onwards, through the Earthquake Search section. You can search for earthquakes:

• In the past 20 days or within a selected time interval.
• Worldwide, throughout Italy, closest to the current location, around a municipality, or by entering specific coordinate values.
• With magnitudes within a selected range.

Special attention has been given to the scientific information regarding earthquakes; there are indeed sections linked to the INGVterremoti blog at ingvterremoti.wordpress.com.

Communication times

The data on earthquakes presented in this app and on all INGV websites and channels are obtained by INGV seismologists, who are present 24/7 in the seismic monitoring control rooms in Rome, Catania, and Naples within 30 minutes of an earthquake occurring.

In fact, a technical time is necessary to review the automatic data and obtain the best possible location. Generally, these times range from 5 to 30 minutes (on average after about 10-15 minutes). This explains the delay between the occurrence of the seismic event and its publication on NGV websites, INGVterremoti social media, and in this app.

Currently, INGV does not provide automatic data.

UTC time

In the Recent Earthquakes section, the event times are expressed using the international reference time UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). To obtain Italian time, you need to add 2 hours if daylight saving time is in effect or 1 hour if standard time is in effect.
